‘Colour outside the lines’

At primary school, I was always told to colour or ‘stay’ between the lines. The colouring part I always enjoyed, but I would overthink the colour choices I had, which medium to use, how evenly I used the pencil, always sharpening, and be mad at myself if I didn’t get it ‘right’ or made a ‘mistake’. This is the way I was taught, and I never felt like I ever had enough time to finish, so my colouring in pages were always half empty, never completed, or I gave up on one and started with another. Fast forward to Art School at Uni and growth throughout my career, I have come to understand and accept that it is not only OK to colour outside the lines, but it is an integral part of my creativity and how I view the world through my strong visual and sensory lenses. We really can’t solve any problem unless we think outside the square or ‘colour outside the lines’ in this case. It fosters critical thinking, sensitive observation, and problem-solving – skills that the world desperately needs now and in the future.
